homemade gingerbread kits!

I took on the task of making my own gingerbread houses for our "Ginger-Off" party this past Saturday night! I used a simple recipe and baked four batches to create six houses. While I was making them, I thought it would be cute to package the houses up (unassembled) and give them away as gifts. For extra love, attach a recipe for the frosting... cute, right? I will post some photos of our Ginger-Off  night later!

There's one gingerbread house in that package!

Here's the recipe (from Food Network) for one gingerbread house. If you want to make two, double it up like I did. It works great!

Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup light molasses or dark corn syrup
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons water

Directions:
In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter, brown sugar, molasses, cinnamon, ginger, ground cloves and baking soda together until the mixture is smooth. Blend in the flour and water to make a stiff dough. Chill at least 30 minutes or until firm. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Roll out the dough and use cutters to create your little houses! Bake for about 10 minutes or until crispy.

Supplies:
Gingerbread cutouts: I bought mine at Michaels.

how did you get the gingerbread to not rise and become misshapen? i did this last year, and for some reason in the oven they changed shape on the edges? yours are perfect!

That's a great idea. I'm actually making gingerbread man jars for gifts. pPur contents, make man. You get the gist!

I love your canisters and am looking for something like them! Where did you get them?

Hi Lisa! I got the canisters from Williams Sonoma about three years ago... I actually think they may still have them!! Thanks for the comment ;) XO
